Is it possible to be sick after getting the whooping cough shot?

My best friend, well maybe my boy friend, said he was sick from the shot so therefor he couldn't make our night to the movies. I don't want to think he is lying but he seemed just fine to go out to the same place for dinner that I went to with my family that same night.
